National Forests and Wilderness Areas
Routt National Forest
The Routt National Forest encompases some great wilderness areas around Steamboat as well as the Steamboat Ski area. It offers a variety of outdoor activites for all seasons. Hiking, backpacking, fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing and much much more. More information.
Mount Zirkel Wilderness
The Mount Zirkel Wilderness offers beautiful hiking and backpacking as well as some great fishing. Offering 150 miles of hiking trails and an abundance of wildlife. The rugged area has broad valleys and wonderful alpine lakes and cirques.
Flat Tops Wilderness
The second largest wilderness area in Colorado boasting over 160 miles of hiking trails. The Flat Tops offer unforgettable scenery. Recreation includes camping, hiking, fishing and hunting. The "Devils Causeway" in the Flat Tops is a popular destination. It is a narrow ridge with sheer cliffs on each side offering an exhilarating crossing.
Fish Creek Falls
The Fish Creek Falls is one of the most popular attractions of the Steamboat Springs area. Its close proximity to town and the spectacular falls attract large numbers of visitors. A picnic ground and interpretive signing add to the attraction. However, as the trail climbs in elevation above the falls, fewer people are encountered. The area near the Continental Divide offers access to several lakes and many subalpine meadows making it an attractive area for backpacking.
