Tuesday, November 24, 2009
The Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation kicked off the 2009/2010 season today, Wednesday, November 25, 2009 with Scholarship Day and specially priced $20 lift tickets. Scholarship Day is the traditional opening day benefit for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club’s (SSWSC) Scholarship Fund.
The start of the season is always a special time in a resort community such as Steamboat and a great reason to celebrate the opportunities and possibilities of the coming winter,” said Chris Diamond, president and chief operating officer of the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “With multi-million dollar improvements to the snowmaking system over the past three years, we’re seeing the results firsthand and the benefit this new technology provides the resort in terms of getting of to a great start to the season."
Specially-priced $20 lift tickets are offered ONLY today. Beginning tomorrow season passes and value passes will be valid. Season Passes and value passes can be purchased and picked up in the Main Ticket Office open daily from 8 am to 5 pm in Gondola Square.
The resort opened with skiing and riding on 12 trails today including Beeline, Big Foot, Boulevard, Preview, Right-O-Way, Stampede, Yoo Hoo, Jess’ Cut-Off, Sitz, Vogue, See Me and Lil’ Rodeo. For those looking to get their jib on, Lil' Rodeo terrain park is open with 12 rails and features. The Christie Peak Express and Preview lifts are operating.
“With nearly a foot of snow in the past three days, mountain crews have done a tremendous job taking advantage of the current weather pattern and will provide the best experience, good vertical and most terrain possible for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend,” said Doug Allen, vice president of mountain operations. “We’ve already received nearly 41 inches of snow since Oct. 1st and could be on track for a third consecutive 400 inch season.”
The resort currently plans to open the gondola and Heavenly Daze on Friday as well as Burgess Creek lift with Rudi’s Run, Lightning and Ego trails. Please note, with the Gondola opening, there will be no beginner terrain available from the top of the Gondola down to the base area and beginners will be required to download. Remember trails and lifts are subject to change without notice as conditions change.
“Everyone needs to ski and ride with care, within their ability levels, and remember, unmarked obstacles and other natural terrain features may be encountered at any time,” said John Kohnke, patrol director. “Skiers and riders should keep in mind that even though Wednesday is Scholarship Day and their season pass is not valid; if they are caught on a closed trail or skiing/riding in an unsafe manner, we will pull their season pass.
